For the first time in decades, a Democrat wins an Alabama Senate race
In a stunning rebuke of the Bannon era of Republican politics, Democrat Doug Jones – a prosecutor – has beat Republican candidate Roy Moore in the race to become the next U.S. Senator from Alabama.
Jones, a prosecutor who famously prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan for the Civil Rights era bombing of a Birmingham church that killed four young black girls, beat Roy Moore, who faced allegations of pursuing sexual relationships with teen girls.
Jones will replace Jeff Sessions, a Republican who vacated the seat earlier this year after becoming Donald Trump’s attorney general.
