Jones will be the only Democratic senator with a black chief of staff
Incoming U.S. Senator Doug Jones on Tuesday named Dana Gresham as his chief of staff.
Gresham, a fellow Alabamian, served as Assistant Secretary for Governmental Affairs in the Department of Transporation under President Barack Obama – as his Chief of Staff.
The hire will make Jones the only Democratic senator with a black chief of staff.

Jones promised to appoint a diverse cabinet after high turnout among black voters in Alabama propelled him to an unexpected victory in one of the most reliably Republican states in the country last month.
The only other U.S. senators with black chiefs of staff are both Republicans – Sens. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Jerry Moran of Kansas.
According to a 2016 report from Roll Call, just 5 percent of senate staffers are black.
In addition to Gresham, Jones announced three other hires: Mark Libell for legislative director, Ann Berry for transition adviser, and Katie Campbell for deputy legislative director.
Jones will be sworn into the U.S. Senate seat once held by Donald Trump’s Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, by Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday, making him the first Alabama Democrat sworn into the Senate in 25 years.
