Editor’s Note

The 2017 Resistance did not begin in Washington D.C., nor was it begun by politicians – it was begun by people in small towns and cities like Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Shortly after Donald Trump took office, hundreds of residents of Hattiesburg stood alongside students at the University of Southern Mississippi to protest Trump’s Muslim ban and his plans to implement draconian immigration laws. This short film by Mattlan Ladner offers a glimpse from the Deep South of the kind of events that set the stage for a year of sustained resistance all across America.
